Sewing has always been present in my work , sewing being sometimes the painter’s answer to the sculptor’s welding. This sewing or stitching became even more prominent, a tool in itself, in a series of ‘plastic‘ drawings I develop while living in Spain, 1997-98.

With time the stitching became embroidery of sorts, evolving as a technique on its own right in this group of mixed media paintings. They toy with certain sculptural ideas already present in earlier work, in which the negative spaces come to play an important role in the final composition. As a way of make such spaces more poignant, the mixed media pieces had been fixed to irregular hard frames of MDF that projects from the wall, and are covered in felt, emphasizing their tactile aspect: felt and wool, lace and metal texture, timber structures where present, etc. Ultimately, these woks take upon non-painterly elements and legitimize them as painting tools.
